Whitechapel fire: Huge blaze seen in London tower

Fire crews are at the scene of a huge fire after a blaze broke out in east London this afternoon.

The London Fire Brigade has confirmed they sent 10 fire engines and 70 firefighters after a fire broke out on Whitechapel High Street, east London earlier this afternoon.

The building affected is reportedly the Relay Building, a 21-storey residential block.

The inferno sparked dozens of calls to the emergency services.

Earlier today, the fire brigade wrote: “We’re dealing with this fire on #WhiteChapel High Street. Ten fire engines & 70 firefighters are at the scene. Please avoid the area if possible.”

The fire brigade said they sent 70 firefighters to tackle the blaze

Witnesses said “huge” glass panels were falling “100s of metres” to the ground

Witness Owen Willis told The Mirror: “From the eastern view, on Commercial Road, we can see a row of windows blown out with fire burning on the ceilings still.

“It’s very windy so it looks like the smoke and flames are blowing all over the place.

“Seems to be dying down a bit although that’s just what we can see from outside.”

Earlier today another tweeted a video showing raging orange flames climbing up the side of the glass high-rise tower as clouds of dark smoke billowed into the sky.

He captioned the video, saying he could see “huge” glass panels falling “100s of metres” from the tower.
