Ex-Met Police officer denies raping woman while still serving in force

A former Metropolitan police officer has denied raping a woman while he was still serving in the force. Appearing today (Tuesday, March 1) at the Old Bailey, Stephen Kyere, from Ashford, pleaded not guilty to the charges of rape, attempted rape and indecent assault.

Kyere, 58, is alleged to have raped a woman in Teddington, South West London in 2004 when he was a serving but off-duty constable, who had been working in Hammersmith and Fulham borough. The Met said that he had retired in March 2021 but misconduct matters would be considered following criminal procedures.

He was charged via postal requisition following an investigation by the South West Command Unit and appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates on February 1. In a statement, Scotland Yard said: “A former Metropolitan Police officer has been charged with rape, attempted rape and indecent assault.

“The charges relate to an incident in Teddington in April 2004 when the officer, then attached to Hammersmith and Fulham police, was off duty. Former PC Kyere was charged by postal requisition in January 2022 following an investigation by officers at the South West Command Unit.

‘He retired from the Metropolitan Police on March 19, 2021. Misconduct matters will be considered following the criminal process.’ Specialist support has also been provided to the alleged victim.”

He was granted unconditional bail with Judge Mark Lucraft QC scheduling a provisional trial date for January 16, 2022. He said the trial would likely be heard before a High Court judge.
