London weather: Freak hailstorm leaves South and West London streets looking like they’ve been hit by snow

A freak hailstorm in parts of London has left streets looking like a winter wonderland as cars and houses have been covered with a blanket of ice. The unusual weather event hit areas around Croydon, Wimbledon, and Richmond today (24 February)

Whilst the impact of the hailstorm would lead some to believe that it went on for a considerable amount of time, witnesses on the scene say that the hailstorm only lasted around five minutes.

Areas were covered in a thing layer of snow in Wimbledon

The Met Office has issued weather warnings for snow, ice, and lightning today and tomorrow, but it covers parts of the north of England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

The yellow warnings read: “Icy stretches possible on untreated surfaces overnight. Some icy patches could occur on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, perhaps leading to injuries or accidents.”

It warned of further wintry showers and snowfall mainly on hill.s
