The Middlesex-London Health Unit says the eight deaths are not a data-dump, which has created statistic anomalies in the past. Per unofficial LFP records, this sets a new mark for single-day deaths after seven were recorded one day last month and once in January 2021.

Details of the latest deaths, per public-health officials:

  • Male, 40s – three vaccine doses
  • Male, 60s – two doses
  • Male, 60s – three doses
  • Male, 60s – unvaccinated
  • Male, 60s (long-term care resident) – three doses
  • Male, 70s – unvaccinated
  • Female, 90s – two doses
  • Male, 90s (long-term care resident) – three doses

January was the second-deadliest month of the pandemic in London and surrounding Middlesex County, with 46 deaths attributed to the virus. Per LFP tracking, February’s death toll has now exceeded that number. January 2021 remains the deadliest month locally, with 71 fatalities.

There are encouraging figures at London Health Sciences Centre, where on Wednesday there were eight COVID patients in intensive care – down 50 per cent from one week prior. There were 51 inpatients in total at the London hospital Wednesday, the lowest mark since now-ending pandemic restrictions were slapped down on Jan. 5.

There were six COVID patients in Children’s Hospital on Wednesday and five or fewer in pediatric intensive care. The number of staff diagnosed with the virus was 160, well below the Omicron-wave high of 512 set on Jan. 12.
