South London’s Dillian Whyte to face the fists of Tyson Fury

SOUTH LONDON’S Dillian Whyte will face the fists of World Boxing Council (WBC) champion Tyson Fury when the pair meet in April.

Whyte, who hails from Brixton and is known as ‘The Body Snatcher’, will challenge Fury for the coveted belt, which could lead to an undisputed world title clash against the winner of Oleksandr Usyk’s rematch against Anthony Joshua for the WBA, IBF and WBO belts.

Whyte, who holds the WBC interim title after a rematch win over Alexander Povetkin, looked to set to miss out on the Fury bout but reportedly put pen to paper in the last few days. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, reportedly had back-up options for the 34-year-old Whyte to fight Anthony Joshua in a rematch or a trilogy match with Dereck Chisora.

Joshua and Whyte met at the O2 Arena in 2015 with the former succeeding by a seventh-round knockout in a thrilling fight. Joshua picked up the British heavyweight title in the process.

After lengthy discussions between both teams came to nothing, Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions won the purse bids in January with a £30 million bid, beating Whyte’s promoter Eddie Hearn who was the only other bidder.

The ever-improving Whyte has built a formidable reputation in United Kingdom with just two defeats on his record. There was a suggestion his decision to delay signing his contract was an attempt to unsettle Fury, but the ‘Gypsy King’ poked fun at the idea.
