The place in Essex most likely to complain about their noisy neighbours

People in Epping Forest are some of the most likely in England to complain about their noisy neighbours, new data analysis has found.

According to the Reach data unit, those living in the Epping Forest area of Essex are the most likely in the county to go to the council about the noise made by those around them.

The data is based on estimates created and collected by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), using a combination of actual counts of noise-based complaints and modelled data.

Residents in Epping Forest made an estimated 1,582 complaints about noise in the year to March 2020.

This is a rate of 12.0 per 1,000 of the population, making Epping complaints significantly higher than the national average – only 6.4 per 1,000. It’s one of the highest rates in the country outside London.

But it’s not just Epping where people are keen to grumble about their neighbours’ decibel production. Southend has been estimated as the next most likely place in Essex where people will report noise, at a rate of 11.6 per 1,000.

The figures cover the period before the Covid pandemic began, but the CIEH has said it it has heard that some councils have seen big increases in complaints about residential noise during the lockdown.

Across England, an estimated 359,231 complaints were lodged during the year.

The latest CIEH figures also show that noise complaints were more common in more deprived neighbourhoods than in affluent areas.

In the most deprived parts of the country, an estimated 47,570 complaints were made in 2019-20, at a rate of 6.1 per 1,000. Meanwhile, in the least deprived areas an estimated 13,955 were lodged, at a rate of just 3.4 per 1,000 of the population.
