‘It’s absolutely unacceptable’ – Ben Heneghan slams Dons’ shameful display at Bolton – South London News

Ben Heneghan labelled AFC Wimbledon’s performance in their 4-0 loss to Bolton Wanderers as “an absolute embarrassment” – and says that his side have 14 cup finals left heading into the remainder of the League One campaign.

The Dons have failed to pick up a win in their last 13 League One outings and find themselves just a point above the relegation zone with no games in hand remaining over those around them.

Former Millwall forward Jon Dadi Bodvarsson opened the scoring at the University of Bolton Stadium in the 36th minute, with three second-half strikes from the hosts condemning the Dons to their worst defeat under Mark Robinson since he took the job over a year ago.

Speaking to Wimbledon’s media team after the game, Heneghan said: “An absolute embarrassment – we got run ragged from start to finish. There was no character, no bottle about us, no fight – it’s absolutely unacceptable.

“I am embarrassed. That’s one of my lows in football – I can’t lie. I deeply apologise to the fans for that. We will fund their travel or tickets or anything because that can’t happen. That cannot happen as a football player.

“To sum it up, as a squad today, we have got the young lad Morgz [Morgan Williams] who is cleaning that dressing room now, and he didn’t even get on.”

Asked where the previous momentum had gone from their recent performances, with the Dons falling apart after the first goal, Heneghan added: “We started off with Nesta [Guinness-Walker] having a shot. Chiss [Ethan Chislett] has got played in and should have done better to control it.

“But apart from that, we have been run ragged – got played off the park. They had a cigar out – we couldn’t get near them. That is down to every single player.”

Wimbledon’s next two fixtures are against teams below them in the table, with Robinson’s side taking on fellow relegation candidates Gillingham and Doncaster within the space of a week.

“Let’s be honest, we have got 14 cup finals left – there is no dressing it up or anything,” said the 28-year-old.

“This is the time that we have got to show the bottle and realise what a predicament we are in.”
