Storm Eunice: Terrifying video shows scaffolding blown off tower block roof by Storm Eunice

A terrifying video shows scaffolding lifting up from a block of flats due to strong winds. Storm Eunice has been battering the capital since 9am this morning (Friday, February 18), with winds of up to 70mph reported.

Milner Road in Wimbledon has been completely shut off by police due to the scaffolding coming loose, with horrified onlookers watching on. The video posted online shows the block of flats, believed to be called Madison Heights, with the metal poles and sheets lifting up off the top of the building.

Metal sheets are flying off the scaffolding and landing as far away as Merton High Street

Several parts of the metal roof are also scattered across the road, falling as far as Merton High Street, as police tape stretches across the scene. South Wimbledon Tube station is also closed. A police officer at the scene told MyLondon the road could be closed for “hours” and is asking members of the public to “retreat for your own safety”.

The London Fire Brigade is also in attendance, as well as an ambulance. It has not been confirmed if there have been any injuries.

The Met Office issued a very rare red weather warning across the whole of London for today, as Storm Eunice continues to cause chaos across the capital’s roads, rail networks and buildings. Around 1,000 people were evacuated after a giant hole was torn in the roof of the O2 Arena in Greenwich this afternoon, leaving a giant gap in the side of the venue.

Network Rail has said : “All lines are suspended affecting services between Euston and Milton Keynes until further notice. The message to passengers is ‘DO NOT TRAVEL’ today as the railway network is being battered by gale force winds. Rapid response teams are clearing fallen trees and debris which are blocking lines in multiple locations on the West Coast main line.”

James Dean, Network Rail’s West Coast South route director, added: “Hundreds of engineers are out in horrendous conditions trying to maintain and protect the railway from the onslaught of this major storm. Because of Storm Eunice’s severity we’ve had no choice but to close some routes as it’s too unsafe to run trains.”
