A block of flats was evacuated after a “massive fire” broke out in a car park underneath the building. Five fire engines and around 35 firefighters from London Fire Brigade (LFB) were called to The Quarterdeck on the Isle of Dogs on Wednesday night (February 9).
Met Police officers were seen taking statements at the scene and the fire was under control by around 11.40pm. An LFB spokesperson confirmed that no one was injured, but three motorcycles were damaged by the blaze.

Firefighters carried out a search of the building to check if smoke had spread to other flats, evacuating around 20 residents while others remained inside their flats. One resident said: “I hope everyone is OK, these fires are getting ridiculous now.”
Confused residents expressed their panic in a local Facebook group, with one saying: “I don’t know what’s going on but they [firefighters] are downstairs […] If it’s been [put] out, how come they are still there? Do I have to leave my home or?…”

The LFB said that 16 calls were made regarding the fire. Firefighters from Millwall, Poplar, Whitechapel, Shadwell and Bethnal Green fire stations attended the scene. A fire brigade spokesperson said. The cause of the fire is currently unknown and is under investigation by the Met and the brigade.
An LFB spokesperson said: “Firefighters were called to a fire in the car park under a block of flats on The Quarterdeck on the Isle of Dogs. Three motorcycles were damaged by fire. Firefighters carried out a search of the property to check whether smoke had spread into the flats above and evacuated around 20 people whilst other residents remained inside their unaffected flats. There were no reports of any injuries.”

They added: “The brigade’s 999 Control Officers took 16 calls to the fire. The Brigade was called at 2248 and the fire was under control by 2341. Five fire engines and around 35 firefighters from Millwall, Poplar, Whitechapel, Shadwell and Bethnal Green fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.”
