Arsenal close in on early summer transfer as ‘paperwork complete’ on £22m Edu decision

Arsenal are reportedly close to sealing a summer move for New England Revolution stopper Matt Turner.

According to Mail Online, the Gunners have completed all of the necessary paperwork for the signing of the American international, with only a medical and a work permit stopping him from becoming an Arsenal player.

The intention is for Turner to become the north London club’s first addition of the summer transfer window as Edu and Mikel Arteta continue to reshape the current squad at the Emirates Stadium.

New England Revolution head coach Bruce Arena has already confirmed that the American will soon seal a switch to north London.

Speaking to the Boston Herald, he said: “Obviously, everyone’s well aware of Matt Turner with the summer transfer to Arsenal. There’s not much more comment on that. If it hasn’t been fully executed, it will be.”

It is further suggested that the Gunners are set to pay £7.5million for Turner’s services.

Once his move to the Emirates is confirmed, it could signal another significant exit from Arsenal – with a number of prominent figures having waved goodbye over recent seasons.

Former Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno has fallen down the pecking order this season following the arrival of Aaron Ramsdale.

The German, who is valued at £14.4million by transfermarkt, has been linked with an exit and could be allowed to leave following Turner’s arrival.

He has just a year-and-a-half remaining on his current contract in north London having made 124 appearances for the club following his 2018 arrival but it has been suggested that he could be set to depart on a free transfer.

Turner is not expected to be first-choice once he becomes an Arsenal player but is likely to occupy Leno’s role as back-up should he eventually close his chapter at the Emirates Stadium.
