Where to get a HIV test in London, what a test involves and how long it takes to get one

The HIV Testing Week campaign has begun, and health services are urging as many people as possible to get tested.

Londoners can order a home testing kit easily and discreetly from the Sexual Health London (SHL) website for free, however, it is also possible to visit clinics in person. SHL has built a clinic finder – all you have to do is enter your postcode to find the clinic nearest to you.

Though Covid restrictions have eased across the country, those wishing to visit clinics in person are required to wear face coverings throughout their appointment. Below we have put together a guide of all the clinics throughout London that offer confirmatory testing for HIV, Hepatitis C or Hepatitis B, as well as an overview of what an HIV test involves.

What does an HIV test involve?

HIV tests require a blood sample to work. If you’re testing at home, you’ll be provided with a tube and a lancet to pierce your fingertip. Using the lancet, you will be able to draw blood from your finger by “milking” it into the tube. The prick hurts a little, but the pain wears off quickly and you’ll be provided with a small plaster to stem the bleeding, which also stops fairly quickly.

A description on the website of HIV charity Terrance Higgins Trust reads: “An HIV test is a blood test. It does not detect HIV itself but looks for a protein found in an HIV cell, or an antibody made by the body to fight HIV.

“HIV tests in the UK are very reliable. They can occasionally produce a positive result which is then found to be negative when tested again. This is called a false positive and is rare, occurring in less than 1 in 1000 cases.”

Below you’ll find a list of clinics offering HIV testing in London. Not all of them offer HIV PEP or HIV management following confirmation of diagnosis, so follow the links to see if they have all the services you require.
