Man, 24, arrested after London bus sex attacks on schoolgirls

A 24-year-old man has been arrested after four teenage girls were sexually assaulted on buses across London. Multiple girls aged 13 to 17 were followed and groped by the man over a two-month period.

Metropolitan Police detectives investigating four separate incidents in Greenwich borough arrested the man in question on January 28 and he has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

The force increased patrols in the area after the spate of incidents began on December 16 – including when one 13-year-old was chased off a bus by her attacker. The Safer Transport team will be out more in the SE28 postcode area.

On December 16, a 13-year-old girl got off a 229 bus on Crossway, near the junction of Hoverton Road, Thamesmead. She was followed off the bus by a man who sexually touched her before again running away when the victim screamed.

On January 12, a 16-year-old girl was walking down Poplar Place, Thamesmead, when she was approached by a man asking for directions. He pushed her against a fence and sexually touched her before she screamed and was able to run away.

The following day on January 13, a 17-year-old girl was followed off the Route 422 bus by a man at Artillery Place, Woolwich. He followed her into a nearby property and grabbed the back of her leg, causing her to fall. As she was on the floor he sexually touched her and ran from the scene when the victim shouted for help.

Less than a week after this incident, on January 18, a 16-year-old girl was walking down Kentlea Road, Woolwich, when she was approached by a man who asked for directions. As she attempted to walk away, he sexually touched her before she was able to escape.

Detective Inspector John Millward, who is leading the investigation into the incident, said: “Our investigation is progressing but we would continue to ask members of the public to remain vigilant. You will continue to see extra officers in our open spaces.”
