Rashmi, 61, approached the man who she describes as white, six feet tall, and in his early twenties. He was wearing a dark hooded top and a mask.

She told MyLondon: “He came into my eye view as I turned to walk by the block of flats. He was staggering and stumbling, I was a bit scared to begin with.

“He staggered 10-15 steps and then fell and sat against a wall. I asked him ‘Are you ok? Do you need help’, he shook his head.

“I was really nervous for him, I went back and asked him three or four times, and said shall I get an ambulance for you. He had his left hand inside his hoodie, he was holding onto his wound”

Rashmi tried to get help from passers-by but described how two men just walked by when they saw the man.

“They just walked off, a lady went back into her flats, I think she was scared, but I was surprised by the men who just walked away, it was an inhuman thing to do”

An off duty policeman who drove past and saw Rashmi trying to get help stopped as the man headed towards Bishops Avenue.

Police were called and paramedics were sent to the scene. A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 10.14pm [ on Sunday] to reports of an incident at East Finchley Station on Great North Road, N2.

“We sent an ambulance crew and a medic in a car to the scene. We treated a man at the scene and took him to hospital.”

Rashmi returned a while later after hearing police cars and the ambulance siren and said officers confirmed to her that the man had been stabbed.

Following the incident, Rashmi said: “I’m still having sleepless nights, I’m quite shaken up. I hope he’s ok, and it’s not fatal. I usually feel quite safe, but have seen a few people mugged for phones, (on mopeds). There’s been a lot of muggings in Finchley central and around East Finchley station, I do feel they need more police patrolling.”

Rashmi who posted about the incident on her local NextDoor social media group added: “People should be aware, it could have been a life or death situation, maybe someone in his family sees the post, I just pray that the guy was ok”
