Chelsea complete signing for talented young star 15 hours after transfer window closes

Chelsea have announced the signing of exciting young striker Mason Burstow from Charlton Athletic, over 15 hours after the January transfer window closed.

It was a frustrating window on the whole for Thomas Tuchel. There were ambitions of strengthening at left-back and in attack at a first-team level but moves for either position did not materialise.

But plucking a talented striker from the famous Charlton Athletic academy will be welcome news to many fans.

Burstow will now return on loan to The Valley for the remainder of the 2021-22 season under Johnnie Jackson before the 18-year-old joins up with Chelsea in pre-season.

Charlton originally rejected a substantial bid for the player earlier in the transfer window but were finally tempted into a sale although the final fee remains undisclosed.

But speaking to Charlton Athletic’s official website after the deal was announced, Addicks owner Thomas Sandgaard described the deal as ‘excellent’.

“We’ve had a lot of interest in Mason but we only were going to let him go if it was an excellent deal for the club,” he said.

“Chelsea have matched our valuation and, as part of the deal, he will come back to us on loan which was important for us.”

This season has seen the 18-year-old burst into the first-team in south London. score six goals in 14 appearances, including in his most recent appearance against Hartlepool in the EFL Trophy.

After the announcement was made, Burstow himself took to Twitter to deliver his own snap reaction to the news being confirmed.

“Delighted for it to be official, I’ll keep my head down and stay fully committed to @CAFCofficial 110%” he wrote.
