BBC Graham Norton Show: James McAvoy’s love life from marrying his onscreen girlfriend who was in Sex Education to ‘growing close’ with co-star 13 years younger

James McAvoy is one of Scotland’s most famous actors, having enjoyed a successful career spanning back to 1995.

The X-Men and Gnomeo and Juliet star, 42, shows no sign of stopping as he recently starred in the 2021 thriller My Son, which received wide praise from critics.

Tonight (Friday, January 28), he will appear on The Graham Norton Show on BBC One to discuss his recent and current projects on the famous red sofa.

Despite convincingly portraying several romances onscreen, his real life love life has been far from smooth sailing.

While working on Shameless, McAvoy started a relationship with co-star Anne-Marie Duff, who played his character’s love interest.

They soon became close and eventually married in November 2006, and share a son called Brendan who was born in 2010.

The pair’s marriage lasted just short of a decade, after they called time on their relationship in May 2016.

To minimise disruption to their son’s life, they shared a home in North London when not working elsewhere on different acting projects.

Duff is a successful star in her own right, with dozens of film and TV acting credits to her name.

Most recently, she has played Erin Wiley in Sex Education and Tracy Daszkiewicz in The Salisbury Poisonings.

After splitting from Duff, McAvoy grew close with his X-Men co-star Alexandra Shipp, who is 13 years younger than the Scottish heartthrob.

A source told The Mirror in 2016: “It’s no great secret how they’ve got close. James has been quite open among the cast and crew that his marriage was over – and it seems he has struck up a friendship with Alex since then.

“It’s been the source of some gossip among those connected to the film – but they’ve kept things low key.”

Pictures from the X-Men premiere at the time showed McAvoy resting his hands on his co-star’s hips as they shared a joke.

The Graham Norton Show airs tonight (January 28) at 10.35pm on BBC One.
