Two budget retailers are warring over a £1 engagement ring which look identical according to some shoppers.
Poundland has sold its £1 ‘Bling Ring’ in previous years, marketing it as a “placeholder ring” – with the idea that customers will buy more expensive ones at jewellery shops at a later date.
With Valentine’s Day coming so soon after Christmas, many people are out of pocket for the first few months of the year, and so can opt for this cheap alternative while they save for the real thing.
Asda has announced this week that it is selling its own version of the ring, also at the bargain price of £1.

Made entirely of plastic, it comes in a red, heart-shaped box as a gift for the most romantic day of the year on February 14.
The George Home Valentine’s Engagement Ring is available to buy in stores up and down the country and online.
The production description reads: “Share some love with this ring. With matching heart box.”
Poundland, which has 138 stores in London, have hit back at Asda, suggesting that they have copied their original idea.
Tagging Asda, a Poundland rep posted a photo of their “original” version of the ring saying: “Hi Asda. What do they say about imitation and flattery? Nothing says “I love you” like the original £1 #Poundland Bling Ring. Available in our stores nationwide #KnockOffLove.”
Poundland bosses say that more than 20,000 rings were sold in just one week back in 2019, when they launched in time for Valentine’s Day.
While some thought the cheap jewellery was a great idea, others disagreed and said you shouldn’t be able to pick your own engagement ring.

One Twitter user wrote: “Just read that @asda launched a £1 engagement ring for Valentine’s Day… I find that so hilariously British.”
A second amused shopper added: “I will take my eight-year-old son to get one for his girlfriend, he proposed in the school playground the other day with a pretzel, I think she would prefer one of these!”
While some shoppers mocked the ring for being “cheap”, one person one Facebook user chimed in: “Honestly my man could have proposed to me with a Haribo ring and I would have still said yes.
“I love him more than any material object some people are just shallow.”
