Covid cases by borough: Inner London sees sharp drop in Covid cases as latest figures revealed

nner London has seen a sharp drop in weekly Covid-19 cases, according to the latest data.

An analysis of official case numbers by the Evening Standard reveals that every borough in Inner London saw a significant fall in infections in the seven days up to January 20.

Newham led the way with a 30.4 per cent drop, followed by Kensington & Chelsea (down 26.3 per cent), Tower Hamlets (down 25.1 per cent), Westminster (down 23.9 per cent) and Lambeth (down 22.1 per cent), while Hackney and City of London saw infections decline by 21. per cent.

Overall, cases are dropping in 26 boroughs according to the latest figures, with infections rising in six: Barnet, Havering, Richmond Upon Thames, Kingston Upon Thames, Sutton and Bromley.

London now has the lowest seven-day infection rate of any region in England, with 846.6 cases per 100,000. The North East is the official epicentre with a case rate of 1,286.9, although differences between regions are relatively small compared to earlier in the pandemic.

The number of patients in London hospitals with Covid-19 was reported on Tuesday to stand at 2,762, down 30 on Monday’s total and well below the recent high of 4,074 reported on January 5.

Some 180 of the most seriously ill were reported to be on ventilators in the capital, continuing a steady decline from the Omicron wave high of 243 on January 4.

It comes as latest figures from Transport for London show that commuters are gradually returning to central London, following the Government’s decision to ease Plan B restrictions.

Up to 9am Tuesday morning there were around 900,000 entry and exits on the Tube — up 8 per cent compared to last Tuesday and 51 per cent of normal.

Across the UK, a further 439 Covid deaths on Tuesday – the highest daily toll since last February.

A further 94,326 cases were reported, bringing the total to 16,047,716.
