London Fire Brigade issues urgent warning to anyone with a tumble dryer at home

The London Fire Brigade has issued an urgent warning to anyone with a tumble dryer at home following a fire in Wandsworth.

On January 21, six fire engines and 40 fire engines were called to a block of flats on Arabella Drive in Roehampton, where a fire had broken out due to a tumble dryer.

Ten people were evacuated from the 12-storey block of flats. A woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service crews.

The LFB crews from Richmond, Wandsworth, Fulham, Chiswick and Battersea were called at around 10pm and had the fire under control by 11.10pm that night.

A spokesperson warned that machines drying white goods can make noise – but homeowners shouldn’t ignore the sound.

Users who suspect there may be a problem with their machines should instead turn the machine off and contact a qualified technician.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “If your white goods start making a strange noise, don’t ignore it.

“If you think there’s a problem always unplug it and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair technician.

“Most fires where white goods are the source of ignition are not down to anything you have done – so always make sure you register your appliances as you’ll be informed if any issues are identified with the product you’ve bought.”
