Scotland’s papers: ‘Week of reckoning’ for PM over lockdown parties

Like many papers, The Herald looks ahead to what will be a crucial week for Prime Minister Boris Johnson as he awaits a report over alleged parties at Downing Street during lockdown. It is thought civil servant Sue Gray will publish her findings this week – although the date is not confirmed. The paper claims the PM’s wife Carrie could be “caught up” in the report over parties she held at the PM’s residence.

The paper reports that those who were on duty when a series of lockdown-breaking gatherings allegedly took place have provided detailed testimonies about what they witnessed.

The Daily Express says the prime minister understands major changes are needed to the culture at No 10 in order to deliver on his levelling-up agenda. The paper quotes Transport Secretary Grant Shapps saying the PM can bring the country together in a way that others cannot. It also reports that cabinet members have given their support to Mr Johnson.

A mum of three who was treated for cervical cancer is urging women to attend smear test appointments “before it gets too late”, according to the Glasgow Times. Emma Keyes was diagnosed with the disease last year and underwent three biopsies, a colposcopy and a hysterectomy before she was given the all-clear.

Dundee’s Evening Telegraph reports on a stalker who targeted strangers, including a nurse. Mark Cooney stalked three women over a three-year period. Dundee Sheriff Court heard how Cooney found out which ward the nurse worked on and managed to get hold of a relative’s phone number during his stalking campaign. Sheriff Paul Brown deferred sentence on Cooney for a social work report to be prepared and added his details to the sex offenders register.
