Ayrshire dad’s goal for 2022 is running from Glasgow to London in mental health charity’s aid

A Hurlford dad has almost finished his 2022 goal to run from Glasgow to London virtually in aid of mental health charity MIND.

Spencer Berry moved to East Ayrshire from Luton, Bedfordshire last year and decided to set himself the mammoth 416-mile task on Hogmanay.

The dad-of-two has already raised £2,750 and hopes to continue to put his best foot forward and finish the 16 marathons by Wednesday, February 2.

Spencer explained: “My family and I moved to Ayrshire a year ago and fell in love with the place and the amazing people.

“I started the challenge on January 2 and I’ve been running every day since.

“I’ll run for about two-and-a-half hours every day and at the weekend I’ll do longer runs; I need to hit a minimum of 13 miles per day.

“I’ve always wanted to do something for charity and over Christmas I had some time to think and while I was drinking some bubbly decided to go for this challenge.

“It was my wife’s idea really and she’s been really encouraging.

“I’ve never done any marathon running before but my health has improved massively and I’ve lost about half a stone.

“Although I am replacing those calories with chocolate!”

Spencer added: “I chose MIND because my wife’s uncle Tommy took his own life. Sadly, I never had the privilege to meet him.

“Mental health is paramount and with suicides being a tragic issue with 805 in Scotland alone, far too much. Everyone in times of struggle needs someone to listen intensely to them, put down their phone, turn the TV off and listen and provide support whether just by passing the day can help.

“I set myself the target of raising £500 but I’ve raised over £2,000 so far. I’m really thankful to everyone who has donated and I’m confident I’ll finish by my deadline.
