Ralf Rangnick previews Brentford clash

Anthony Martial is back in the Manchester United squad after holding productive discussions with interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

The Frenchman has asked to leave Old Trafford this month but has so far failed to secure an exit.

Rangnick claimed the forward didn’t want to be included for the weekend’s game at Aston Villa, something Martial has refuted.

Game time has been at a premium for the French star, but he could again be involved against Brentford on Wednesday after discussions were held.

United head to London to face the Bees having dropped two points last time out at Villa Park.

Rangnick saw his side squander a 2-0 lead as their top four charge continues to falter.

Cristiano Ronaldo was missing from the squad completely as he recovers from injury whilst Marcus Rashford was also an absentee, but both could return in west London.

Rangnick will also decide, having cleared the air, whether to involve Martial.

The United boss said: “I had a conversation with him on Sunday, a personal conversation with him about what happened and how I saw the whole situation, the matter is now resolved.

“He didn’t train yesterday and the day before yesterday. He will probably train today and after training, I will then take the decision if he is nominated or not. But let’s see what will happen then.”

He also added: “Cristiano and Marcus were training yesterday, so I suppose they will also be training today.

“But in the press conference before the Villa game I was also convinced Cristiano would be available and he wasn’t, the same with Marcus.”

Anthony Elanga was given an opportunity on the wing against Villa and showed signs of promise.

He will again be in contention with his presence keeping Jadon Sancho out of the starting XI.

Rangnick said on the youngster’s performance: “He was showing up in the training sessions and that was the reason I decided to play him at Villa Park. I think he did well, he showed exactly what I expected him to deliver in that game.”

Several players have been linked with January exits but remain part of the squad going forward.

Dean Henderson remains David de Gea’s understudy and is keen to seek pastures new, but has been told by Rangnick he is going nowhere.

Donny van de Beek’s patience is also wearing thin following a difficult 18 months at Old Trafford where appearances have been few and far between.

Sancho, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw were also among those not spotted at the airport, but are likely to have travelled, reports the MEN.

Confirmed squad members: De Gea, Heaton, Henderson, Varane, Maguire, Lindelof, Telles, Jones, Matic, McTominay, Fred, Van de Beek, Fernandes, Mata, Elanga, Martial, Ronaldo.
