UK weather: ‘Coldest parts of winter still to come’ with snow expected – here’s what it will be like in London

After a relatively mild start to the new year, especially in the southeast, the UK has witnessed a drop in temperatures in recent days.

Some might be hoping we’ve already left the coldest days of winter behind us, seeing as we are already halfway into January and not far away from Spring.

But a senior meteorologist Jim Dale has warned the worst is yet to come.

“Winter is not over”, he told The Express, adding that the “coldest parts of the year” can be expected after January 25.

He said: “As we get towards the end of the month – the coldest on average parts of the year – what we’re seeing is the high pressure pulling away south and west, allowing a north-easterly air stream to come in.

“That may well start to bring some snow events towards the latter stages of the month – so that last week of January.”

Mr Dale said he was referring to January 25 to 28.

He explained that period is “increasingly likely” to see snow across certain parts of the country, including the Highlands and the Grampians and down that eastern coast.

But what can Londoners expect to see in the capital during that period?

According to the weather expert, it all depends on where the wind blows.

“How far that actually comes in, and whether or not we get a proper plunge, depends on a little battle going on,” he said.

“Does it end up in Denmark, Germany or does the thrust come across and affect the eastern parts of the UK and down to the London area?”

According to BBC Weather, while the weather in London from January 25 to 28 won’t be particularly pleasant, there won’t be any snow this far south.

Temperatures will hover around 8C, with the warmest day only rising to 9C. The days will mostly be cloudy and grey, while on January 27, light showers of rain are expected.

If there’s one thing that Mr Dale is sure about, that is that the UK is only “halfway through” and “the coldest part of the year is normally reserved for the end of January and February”.

In the meantime, the UK is expected to see milder temperatures and increased cloud cover over the next week, but could also see fog, mist and ice, added the meteorologist.

The Met Office’s five-day forecast for the UK warns that fog will become “quite widespread and perhaps dense, especially for central and eastern parts of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland cloudier and less cold.”
