Incredible new 50-mile walk along wild stretch of River Thames from London to North Sea has just opened

Londoners will now be able to walk an incredible 50-mile journey which passes vast stretches of natural beauty that lead all the way to Grain, an area on the Kent coast with stunning views of the North sea.

The new walking route opened on Thursday (13 January) and links Woolwich all the way to where the Thames Estuary eventually meets the River Medway.

Natural England, which opened the exciting 47.12-mile trail, said the walk is accessible in all weathers, and passes through some of the finest coast and countryside, as well as iconic seaside towns.

Along the way, Londoners might be graced with the rare opportunity of spotting a grey seal lounging on one of the many small beaches scattered across the river.

The walk is more than 47 miles

Avid birdwatchers will also be pleased to know that flocks of waterbirds such as avocet, knot and dunlin are active at the nature reserve at Cliffe Pools in Kent during the winter months.

There’s also a whole bunch of history to learn about while you’re out and about, as anti-tank obstacles left behind from both world wars are still visible on many of the shores.

While forts are still perfectly reserved in Shornemead, near to Gravesend, which were initially built to protect London in the 1860s.

Lord Benyon, Minister for Rural Affairs and access to nature said: “The England Coast Path is greatly improving access to our cherished coastlines and connecting people across the country with nature, in line with our 25 Year Environment Plan.

“Home to a diverse array of bird life at this time of year, this latest stretch links the salt marshes and mudflats of the Thames Estuary with the heart of London.

“I encourage people of all ages and abilities to venture outdoors and explore this fantastic new path for themselves.”
