The London borough where your bike is most likely to get stolen and what to do if it does

Bikes have grown massively in popularity, with many making the switch from driving to avoid the Tube in the pandemic and since then have stuck with the habit.

Londoners got a bug for biking and its many other benefits – including lessening your carbon footprint, getting daily exercise, and cutting travel costs.

But everyone who lives in the capital will know that riding a bike also carries a huge risk of it being stolen.

More is a ‘hotspot’ for bike theft – with more bikes stolen comparably than any other region in the UK, an ITV News report showed last year.

Since then, MyLondon revealed the London borough with the highest number of reported bike thefts in the Capital.

East London’s borough of Hackney came out on top, closely followed by Westminster and Tower Hamlets.

But luckily, there are ways to limit the chances of having your bike stolen. The following are tips from Cycling UK .

How to keep your bike as safe as possible from theft

  • Always lock the bike frame itself, not just a single tire, as thieves can remove the bike and leave the tire locked
  • Never leave your bike unattended
  • Use a bike lock tested by Sold Secure – Cycling UK recommends a Gold or Silver graded U-Lock with a narrower or shorter shackle
  • Lock your bike in a public place with nearby CCTV rather than somewhere more secluded, like an alleyway
  • Register your bike to Bike Register or Immobilise, and take photographs of the bike, especially any recognisable or unique features or marks
  • You can even etch your postcode into your bike frame to mark it
