BBC Digging For Britain: Viewers all ask the same question moments after show starts

Digging for Britain viewers were all asking the same question within minutes of the BBC Two show staring tonight (January 12).

This evening’s instalment saw the team head to North Somerset, where archaeologists were blown away by the discovery of an entirely new Roman town in the intended pathway of some new electricity cables.

Elsewhere in Pembrokeshire, Alice Roberts revisited Whitesands Bay where a team excavated a mysterious collection of child burials.

Despite all the interesting finds, the one thing that got people talking wasn’t the incredible historical discoveries, it was something much more simple.

Within minutes of the show starting, fans of the show rushed to social media to question why the diggers were wearing hard hats, when the only thing above them is sky.

One wrote: “Why are the archaeologists wearing hard hats whilst digging in a field with only the sky above them? Is the @H_S_E worried that the sky is going to fall in? #DiggingForBritain.”

A second asked: “Why the hard hats? #DiggingForBritain.”

A third said: “Watching #DiggingForBritain and wondering why they are wearing hard hats when there’s nothing above head height and the trenches aren’t that deep.”

In reply to viewers, archaeologist Lucy Taylor wrote: “So many people asking! We must adhere to any client HSE requirements which will often be the same requirements for the construction phase.”
