Mikel Arteta has the perfect Bruno Guimaraes alternative to resolve Arsenal’s midfield dilemma – Bailey Keogh

Arsenal are stepping up their hunt for a central midfielder in the January transfer window and Aaron Ramsey could be the perfect short-term fix.

The Gunners are lacking bodies in the middle of the park and there is also a lack of severe quality.

Mikel Arteta has made his intentions clear that he wants to bring a central midfielder to the club in January, but the acquisition of top-class players in the mid-season window is always tough.

Arsenal are already aware of the quality Ramsey possesses and he wouldn’t need time to adapt to life in north London, so sanctioning a six-month deal would make a lot of sense.

The Welshman left the club in 2019 on a free transfer after 11 memorable years at the Emirates.

His time in Italy hasn’t really gone to plan and now Juve are reportedly open to terminating his contract, according to Calciomercato.

Rudy Galetti adds (via The Sun) that the Gunners are interested in re-signing the 31-year-old as they look to ease their midfield woes.

It was evident in Arsenal’s FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest that Arteta’s side need a more experienced player in the heart of the team. Albert Sambi Lokonga and Charlie Patino’s lack of experience was evident and they could have done with a more mature head alongside them.

Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny’s Africa Cup of Nations commitments leave Arsenal even lighter this month, while the departure of Ainsley Maitland-Niles to Roma on loan hasn’t helped matters either.

The winter months could decide whether Arsenal qualify for the Champions League and so reinforcements are needed.

Sambi Lokonga and Granit Xhaka are the only senior central midfielders remaining at the club, however, the young Belgian midfielder will need to time to get back to full fitness after being sidelined in recent weeks due to Covid.

Xhaka has had constant issues with injuries and suspensions this season and is currently recovering from Covid himself, so there is no guarantee that he will be able to hit the ground running when he does return.

A new midfielder is a necessity this month but Arteta will possibly be wary of splashing big money on players in a notoriously difficult window.

Ramsey still has a lot to give, he already knows the club and the area and his signing wouldn’t break the bank. It seems like a bit of a no-brainer to us.
