London news: ‘Stop expecting state to do it’ Parents told look after kids after stabbing | UK | News

South London pastor Beryl St James urged parents to get more involved in their child’s upbringing as Croydon witnessed a fatal stabbing on Thursday. The Pastor exclaimed that schools, community groups and other public services should not be the only ones involved in childraising. She added both the parents and the state needed to work together if there would be any hope of stamping out knife crime.

Speaking to Sky News, Ms St James discussed the stabbing and demanded parents do more in their child’s upbringing to prevent further knife crime.

She told reporters: “The main part of the community programme is speaking with the parents, and for example, getting parents to find out who their children’s friends are, who are they meeting?

“Are they attending school? What if your child comes in wearing a pair of Balenciaga is? Where did your child get them?

“Get more involved, speak with your child find out what’s going on in their lives.

“I know we all have to work, we all have duties to fulfil but you cannot, as a parent, think that it’s okay to leave the state to continually look after your child.

“We’ve got to get more involved.”

Ms St James added parents and public services needed to work “together” and remarked the exclusion of children from schools may lead them onto a bad path where they are hanging around the wrong people.
