Londoner stuffs car so full of donations for refugees driver can barely fit behind the wheel

An inspirational mother of two has stuffed her car so full of donations for refugees that there is barely enough space for the driver to sit at the wheel.

The donations were being brought to Afghan refugees living in hotels, who were in need, and some of the leftover items were also given to various of the capital’s homeless shelters.

Sarah Gardner, from Isleworth, who runs the charity Serving Our Superheroes, was recognised on the New Years honours list for her tireless voluntary work – the full car was just part of the thousands of donations she has made this year.

Talking about the full car of donations, Sarah said: “It’s been a very busy couple of weeks for the charity. With the help of Brenda from my Rotary club I made up 200 family gift bags for Refugees living in hotels.

“The bags included early years books, toys, notebooks and pens, games such as travel chess and playing cards, toiletries, scarves and hats etc all collected for distribution by Tamzin at Care of Calais.

“Lots of new baby items, clothes, blankets and hats along with nappies and wipes were given to Dr Anika for the Anika Food Charity and were distributed to Afghan refugees in hotels. At the weekend we took toiletries and warm clothes – coats, jumpers, hats and blankets to ShowerBox (a homeless charity).”

Sarah was awarded with a British Empire Meda l for services to the community in the London Borough of Hillingdon, during Covid-19.

The mother of two has continuously donated, collected and supported those in need throughout her borough and across the capital- whilst still holding down a full time job.

“As a charity I have purchased a lot of items cheaper, or had them donated but if people were to buy them themselves the retail value Of all the items would be well over £2 million.

“We are also lucky enough that the Hounslow Treaty Centre has a big donation box for us, so if you are shopping in Hounslow please pop something in the box for us.

“I would like to say I would recommend volunteering to everyone! It’s great making a difference in the world, if everyone does their small part it would have such a huge impact. I would encourage you to add it to your new year’s resolution to do something that helps others.”
