The Metropolitan Police have today discovered a body after a fire destroyed a house in South London.

The property in Mitcham was badly damaged after the fire tore through it in the early hours of January 1.

The fire took place just before 3am on New Year’s Day, and two days later a body has been discovered.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “At 02:49hrs on Saturday, 1 January, police were called to a fire at a residential address in Beecholme Avenue, Mitcham.

“Officers attended with the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service.

“One person was taken to hospital but has since been discharged.

“Due to concerns about the structural integrity of the building, it was not immediately possible for a full search to be conducted.

“On Monday, 3 January the body of a person [no further details] was recovered from the premises.

“Enquiries to identify the person are ongoing.

“At this stage the cause of the fire is not thought to be suspicious.”
