Chelsea can avoid January disaster by repeating Olivier Giroud coup with £16m La Liga bargain – Daniel Childs

Two months ago, Thomas Tuchel and Marina Granovsakaia would have expected the January window as one dominated by the noise surrounding the contract negotiations with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

How we would all love to have those simple irritations back. The defensive contract doubt is only the tip of the iceberg for Chelsea when you consider the more devastating injuries to wingbacks Ben Chilwell and Reece James, with the former out for the season and the latter for six weeks.

Many names have been mentioned, with the latest being Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier. We aren’t the only side to have his name linked to us, with Manchester United and Newcastle United being strongly linked in the last six months.

Trippier, currently at Madrid, was fully expected to return to the Premier League over the summer with Man United chasing the former Spurs fullback.

Rated at £16m by Transfermarkt, it’s expected the 31-year-old will finally move from Atletico Madrid in the January window, with Newcastle United reportedly leading the pack for his signature.

Fabrizio Romano reported on Saturday that the Magpies are pushing to complete their first deal as soon as possible, with the possibility for Chelsea to hijack the move.

“Trippier now has to decide if he wants to leave or not. We’ll move after his decision.” Diego Simeone confirmed.

Trippier’s name won’t likely excite Chelsea supporters given his previous connection to a bitter London rival and the profile of being a more defensive-minded fullback. Tuchel will be looking for more expansive players to fill either Ben Chilwell or Reece James spot.

But you flip back to January 2018, and the name of Olivier Giroud from Arsenal was certainly not viewed as a groundbreaking deal.

He had been replaced by Arsenal the previous summer with the signing of Alexandre Lacazette, and he became surplus to requirements in North London. Giroud arrived as the forward Conte had been crying out for and soon proved to be an inspired transfer.

Trippier provides maturity and experience, sometimes his tireless work might be missed, but it is rarely frantic nor rushed.

Tuchel needs someone who can come in and will take little time to settle for a short-term option. It is why the idea of recalling Emerson Palmieri on loan from Lyon has been so widely reported. Even if it is clear, Chelsea was looking to offload the Italian last summer.

Trippier has undoubted Premier League experience for Burnley and Spurs, 107 appearances in total and has proved his versatility to play within a back-three or back four defensive systems as a traditional fullback or wingback.

There are certainly younger, more expansive options out there. Still, few times the perfect one presents itself in such a small window to recruit new players.

Trippier also has experience in the Champions League with Spurs and Atletico Madrid and played a crucial role in the La Liga club’s domestic triumph last season.

A steady hand can sometimes prove more beneficial than a more trendy option. Out of all the names mentioned, Trippier could be an intelligent compromise.
