Thiago Silva has handed Chelsea a huge boost by signing a one-year contract extension that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until the end of the 2022/23 season.
The Brazil international joined the Blues on a free transfer in the summer of 2020 after his release by Paris Saint-Germain and instantly established himself as one of key members of the starting XI under Frank Lampard.
Silva only improved once Thomas Tuchel, who worked with the defender at PSG, took charge at Stamford Bridge last January. He was placed in the middle of the German’s back three and was an instrumental figure in Chelsea’s Champions League triumph.
A new one-year deal was handed to Silva in the summer and he has already made 20 appearances in all competitions this season under Tuchel, who football.london understands was very keen to keep the 37-year-old at Chelsea for another year.

The Blues head coach has now got his wish with Silva penning a 12-month extension to his deal and giving the club some certainty at centre-back amid the contract stand-offs with Antonio Rudger and Andreas Christensen.
“To play here with Chelsea is a real pleasure. I never thought I would play for three years here in this great club so I’m very happy to stay for another season,” Silva told the club’s in-house media.
“I would also like to say thanks to my family, the club, Marina and to Mr. Abramovich for this opportunity. I will continue to give everything for this club and for the supporters, who have always been by my side since I arrived.
“It’s amazing to have this relationship with the fans and not only that but the players, staff and the whole club. I’m going to give everything to keep playing at this level in the most important league in the world.”
“Thiago Silva’s experience, leadership and performances have been and remain very important to this squad, so we are hugely pleased to extend his contract by another year,” Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added.
We look forward to his continued influence as we seek honours this season and next, and more of the qualities that have led to him having such a big impact for us on and off the pitch.”
