The names and faces of the London women killed at the hands of a man in 2021

4

During 2021, a national debate has taken place on the subject of women’s safety, predatory male behaviour and the role of the police in British society. The death of Sarah Everard in March sparked marches throughout London with Reclaim the Streets, and the murder of Sabina Nessa brought communities together at an emotional vigil to discuss an end to male violence. Despite this, 2021 has seen 24 women killed across London at the hands of men.

The database ‘Counting Dead Women’ has so far listed 136 deaths of women who have been killed where a man is either charged or is the principal suspect.

Many of these murderers are yet to be caught or put on trial.

Of the 136 listed, 24 have been women who were part of their London communities.

Here are the names and faces of all the London women who tragically lost their lives at the hands of men during 2021:

Eileen Dean

Eileen Dean was taken to hospital where she later died

The 93-year-old grandmother was beaten to death with a walking stick at a care home in South London on January 4.

Eileen, who suffered with dementia, suffered “severe” facial and head injuries after she was attacked in her bedroom in Catford.

She died in hospital later the same day.

Alexander Rawson, 63, was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order at the Old Bailey in December. He had attacked Eileen less than two weeks after he had moved into the Fieldside care home.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Wood, who led the investigation, said: “Eileen was a completely defenceless woman whose life was suddenly taken away in a horrific manner.

“She had already been through a great deal, losing her husband almost 30 years ago, but she was described as a calm, quiet and lovely woman by all those who knew her.

“We hope her children and grandchildren have the space to grieve together now the trial is complete and to remember Eileen for the wonderful woman she was.”

Tiparat Argatu

The 43-year-old Thai national was found dead at her home in Whitechapel on January 24.

Police were called to the property after concerns were raised about Tiparat’s welfare shortly before 8:20am, and despite the best efforts of paramedics, she died at the scene.

A post-mortem investigation revealed she had died of head and neck injuries.

She had only moved to London last September to be with her husband.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with her murder, although police have also appealed for information regarding a naked man who was sighted walking near the property in the early hours of that morning.

Anna Ovsyannikova

A 48-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Anna Ovsyannikova, who was found in a property in Ealing on February 22.

Emergency services were called after hearing reports of an unresponsive woman and the 48-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sarah Everard

Sarah Everard was kidnapped, raped and murdered by Wayne Couzens on the evening of March 3

In a murder case that shocked the nation, 33-year-old Sarah Everard was abducted, raped and killed by serving Met police officer Wayne Couzens on March 3.

The marketing executive had been walking home from a friend’s house near Clapham Common, when Couzens falsely arrested her under the pretence of having breached Covid-19 regulations.

He then drove her two hours out of London where he raped her and strangled her, before burning her body and disposing of her remains.

Widespread public appeals were made for information before Couzens was arrested on March 9.

Vigils were held across the country, with a large gathering on Clapham Common causing a controversial response from the police as four arrests were made for breaching Covid lockdowns.

It also sparked a national debate regarding the safety of women and the role of police in British society.

Couzens pleaded guilty to Sarah’s murder and rape, and was handed a whole life order on September 30.

In a statement, her family said: “Sarah lost her life needlessly and cruelly and all the years of life had yet to enjoy were stolen from her. Wayne Couzens held a position of trust as a police officer and we are outraged and sickened that he abused this trust in order to lure Sarah to her death. The world is a safer place with him imprisoned.

“It is almost seven months since Sarah died and the pain of losing her is overwhelming. We miss her all the time. She was a beautiful young woman in looks and character and our lives are the poorer without her.

“We remember all the lovely things about Sarah – her compassion and kindness, her intelligence, her strong social conscience. But we especially like to remember her laughing and dancing and enjoying life. We hold her safe in our hearts.”

Constanta was stabbed in the back with a pair of scissors in the bathroom of the couple’s home.

Her husband initially told shocked paramedics that she had fallen on the scissors, but police officers noticed that the lock on the door had been damaged, indicating she had locked herself in before she was murdered.

He then told officers that the argument had started because Constanta wished to cut her hair in a style he didn’t think would suit her.

Vasile Brauty, 40, was found guilty by a jury at Woolwich Crown Court in October and was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 21 years.

The couple had travelled 200 miles from South London to stay in the Hilton Majestic Hotel and Spa in North Yorkshire.

Their bodies were found just after 10:20pm after a commotion was heard coming from the room.

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Jonathan Sygrove of North Yorkshire Police’s Major Investigation Unit said: “A post-mortem has taken place that has confirmed the couple died from stab wounds. We are treating Ms Gregory’s death as murder and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. This is a very sad case and our thought are with their families and friends at this difficult time.”
