Reported Arsenal transfer target Jonathan David is currently outperforming the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in Ligue 1.
The Lille centre-forward leads the scoring charts in France’s top flight, having netted 12 times in just 19 league outings, two more than Monaco’s Wissam Ben Yedder and three more than Paris Saint-Germain icon Mbappe.
His exceptional form hasn’t gone unnoticed either, with the Evening Standard reporting earlier this month that the Gunners are monitoring his development, whilst having also tracked him during his time with Belgian outfit Gent.
David himself is a self-confessed Arsenal supporter but turned down a move to the Emirates Stadium before eventually completing a transfer to Lille, explaining that his decision came down to a potential lack of game time in north London.
“Everyone knows the Premier League is a high-quality league,” he told France Bleu Nord back in August 2020.
“But my choice was dictated by the fact that above all, I wanted to be sure of playing.
“My choice was made quite early. But I understand that it took a little while to finalise between the two clubs.
“Gent wanted to keep me one more season, but I had made my choice and they respected it.
“I always knew it was going to be done, even if it took a little while. I really liked the sports project that Luis Campos [Lille’s sporting director] and the club management sold to me.
“That’s really what encouraged me to join Lille. In fact, I especially wanted to join a club where I know that I will keep playing and getting better. There is a very good team here with very good players.”
