The London hotel where you can stay for £14 a night but the rooms are no wider than a single bed

A hotel in London is offering stays at its hotel for only £14.40 a night, with a free breakfast – but the rooms themselves are no bigger than a bed.

The London Bridge hotel lowers costs by creating capsule beds which are used to maximise space and house more people in one ‘capsule room’.

The hostel chain, St Christopher’s Inn, London Bridge, took inspiration from the rise of capsule beds in hostels around China, Japan and Singapore to bring the craze to the capital.

They said: “Breaking boundaries in budget travel, this trendy concept was inspired by the rise of capsule beds in hostels around China, Japan and Singapore – so we decided to bring them to the heart of London and installed 26 capsule beds at our award-winning hostel in London Bridge.

The capsules are a UK first and offer cheap stays for travellers in the centre of London

“The capsules at St Christopher’s At The Village are hot on quality, design and space, built with the young 21st century backpacker in mind. Tailoring to the needs and demands of the new-generation traveller, we’ve maxed out the capsules with the latest technology and coolest gadgets. Serious hostel goals.”

The capsules come with a free breakfast and at £14.40 for a one night stay you may be tempted to book.

Inside the capsules are sockets, a bed – just over the size of a single bed, and even a trendy multicoloured light system.

One woman who stayed in the capsules was quick to dispel the fear that they may be claustrophobic, she said: “The capsule style beds were very comfortable and not at all claustrophobic.

“You can sit upright in them, charge your phone and dim the lights in any colour you wish.”

Another impressed traveller said: “they’re very well laid out with plugs, USB ports and a lovely light with a range of colours. The bedding is very comfortable too.”

The main criticism came about the heat inside the capsules. Some reviewers felt that the capsules were too hot and because they were enclosed there wasn’t suitable ventilation.

The St Christopher’s capsule hotel is the first in the UK and not many others have latched onto the idea. For now, the capsules provide a cheap alternative to London’s normally expensive hotels and a perfect place for thrifty travellers.
