London weather: The exact date ‘tropical’ heat will hit Britain as temperatures set to soar

2

The weather in the UK is set to feel decidedly un-Christmassy with some experts predicting a freak “tropical” blast which will promise a record New Year warmth.

The blast will come from a North African plume which is set to sweep Britain from Wednesday.

It’s thought the mild weather will hold out for about a week before the bitter cold returns.

Jim Dale, meteorologist for British Weather Services, said: “A waft of semi-tropical air will come in from Spain and North Africa where it is unusually warm for the time of year.

“Temperatures will rise on Wednesday, and we are expecting about five days of mild weather.

“It is going to be very pleasant for a few days, although there might be the chance of some rain.”

Britain could see a record-breaking warm New Year if temperatures breach the 15C set in Wales in 1922, reports the MirrorOnline.

The 15.6C record for New Year’s Eve in England logged in Great Yarmouth, in 1901, could also tumble.

Mr Dale added: “The record for both days could go.

“It’s time for people to put on t-shirts and flip-flops and get the picnic tables out.

“This will last for about five days, after which we expect to pay for it with the cold to return.”

The Met Office – the nation’s official weather forecaster – is slightly more cautious in its predictions.

Its forecasters have suggested the mercury will peak at 14C in London on Friday, with the rest of the England and the whole of Wales clocking in at 12 or 13C.

Most of Scotland will stay in the high single digit temperatures while Northern Ireland will reach an unseasonable 11C.

This year’s New Years Eve will be much warmer than last year’s, when the temperature plunged well into freezing territory for much of Scotland.

Bookmaker Coral has slashed the odds to 6-4 from 3-1 for New Year’s Eve to be the hottest on record.

Spokesman John Hill said: “Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-teens over the next few days and that opens up the door for a potential record hot New Year’s Eve.

“We have slashed the odds in half on New Year’s Eve being a record breaker.

“It has also prompted support for January to be much hotter than usual in 2022.”

Whether or not Brits will be able to enjoy the balmy weather while seeing in the new year in full fashion remains to be seen.

Boris Johnson will be briefed on coronavirus statistics today before he makes a decision on whether additional coronavirus curbs are needed to deal with the highly infectious Omicron strain.

Britons are warned not to hang up the winter coats just yet though, with the cold set to return in early January.

Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden said: “Further snow events are likely particularly during the first half of January.”
