‘A lot of women are being killed in London but still nothing seems to be happening’: Newham residents react after woman murdered on Boxing Day

Neighbours living in Newham in East London have reacted with shock after learning that a woman, believed to be in her 20s, was found dead at a house.

Police were called to the address on Earlham Grove at 11.56am on Boxing Day and have now launched a murder investigation.

A 26-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is believed to be known to the victim.

The investigation continues as a cordon remains in East London whilst officers work to identify the woman and inform her next of kin.

Residents have spoken of their ‘shock’ at the ‘heart-breaking’ news.

A neighbour who lives on Earlham Grove but wishes to remain anonymous, was shocked to learn of the tragic incident.

The 33-year-old said: “I’ve just got back from seeing family. Didn’t think anything like this would have happened.”

They added: “Heart-breaking. The last thing you want to see, especially around Christmas.

“I feel for her family. I have no clue who she was as it seems a lot of people come and go from all the properties round here. My heart goes out to her.”

They continued: “A lot of women are being killed in London but still nothing seems to be happening. How can we feel safe?”

A second neighbour who has lived on the street for 20 years said: “I was in my doorway and saw loads of police around yesterday on Boxing Day.

“I’ve tried to ask what happened but the police haven’t said anything. It’s a rough area round here. I just keep myself to myself.”

They continued: “Yes the area is dodgy, but this road is actually one of the best ones in Newham. Lots of people with nice cars live on this road compared to everywhere else.”

Another local spoke of their sadness at the news.

“Oh my god, this is so bad. So very young, it is so sad. I can’t believe it. Wow.” they said.
