Arteta defends Aubameyang approach

Having received criticism from celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan for the manner in which he’s dealt with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s recent disciplinary breach, Arteta has explained his decisions.

Aubameyang has been stripped of the Arsenal captaincy and dropped from the squad, triggering suggestions he could leave the north London outfit in the January transfer window.

Asked about the Gabon international and the ruthless action taken against him, Arteta said it was a matter of respect.

“I do not establish my authority by being dictatorial or ruthless,” he said. “I just ask for one thing: respect and commitment.

“At this level, if I don’t get that, I will pack my bags and go somewhere else because that is the minimum I can ask for.”

The Gunners have recovered well after a sluggish start to the season and ahead of their clash with the Canaries they sit in fourth place in the Premier League.

However, they have had to rely on the England international a lot, with statistics showing that Ramsdale is the second-most frequently worked ‘keeper in the top flight, as he’s required to make a save every 23-and-a-half minutes so far this season.

Wilshere on ‘awkward’ Van Persie transfer

Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has said there was an “awkward” atmosphere at the club as speculation about Robin van Persie’s move to Manchester United started to emerge.

The Dutch forward made the controversial switch to the Red Devils in 2012 and helped the club win the Premier League title in his first season.

While the decision saw Van Persie adored by the Old Trafford faithful, the Arsenal supporters were left miffed. Wilshere said the saga was uncomfortable for the players in north London too.

“There were rumours,” he said. “It was awkward actually because there were rumours about him leaving for United. I didn’t know what was happening and I didn’t know what was going on.”
