The underrated East London town named the best place for first time buyers to move to

A new study has revealed the best place for first-time buyers in London and it’s a small town you probably haven’t heard of.

A study by online mortgage lender Proportunity ranked Hornchurch as the best place for first time buyers in the city.

The study took into account numerous factors, including undervalued house prices and growth potential.

And Hornchurch, which only officially became a part of Greater London in 1965, came out on top.

House prices in the town are much lower than the capital’s average.

Average house prices in London exceeded £500,000 for the first time last year according to the ONS.

But in Hornchurch houses start from £375,000.

The town is part of the London Borough Havering and is about an hour away from central London on the district line.

The Havering local government website says Hornchurch boasts 150 shops and restaurants ranging from independent specialist retailers to high street names.

It is also home to Queen’s Theatre where audience’s can enjoy musicals, plays, pantomimes, tributes and more.

Other highlights in the town include period Grade II listed buildings Fairkytes Arts Centre and Langtons House.

Hornchurch is also known in modern history for its airfield which acted as a vital RAF station. Nowadays the land is part of Hornchurch Country Park.

The Hornchurch football team even won the 2020-2021 FA trophy.

As for other top places to buy in London, six of the top ten spots for first time buyers revealed in the Proportunity study were in South London, with East Sheen near Richmond in second place and Herne Hill near Brixton in third.
