Boy, 14, dies and child, 8, hurt as car smashes into bus stop days before Christmas

A 14-year-old boy has died after a van smashed into a bus stop near Cator Park, Kidbrooke, in south east London on Tuesday afternoon, with an eight-year-old boy also injured in the crash

A 14-year-old boy died and two others were taken to hospital after a van smashed into a bus stop in London just days before Christmas.

The 40-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the crash in south east London on Tuesday afternoon.

A woman, 40, and an eight-year-old boy remain in hospital in a non life-threatening condition.

A 14-year-old boy died in hospital an hour after the crash at around 4.30pm.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 15:33hrs on Tuesday, 21 December to Eltham Road at the junction with Kidbrooke Park Road, SE12 following reports of a van collision in collision with a bus stop.

“Officers, the London Ambulance Service, London’s Air Ambulance and London Fire Brigade attended.

“Three pedestrians were found suffering from injuries; they were all taken to a south London hospital for treatment.

“Despite the efforts of medical staff, a 14-year-old boy [Victim 1] was pronounced dead at 16:35hrs. His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

“A 40-year-old woman [Victim 2] and an eight-year-old boy [Victim 3] remain in hospital; their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

“The 40-year-old driver of the van stopped at the scene. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and taken to a south London police station.

“He has been released under investigation.

“Detectives from the Roads and Transport Policing Command are investigating.”

Detective Inspector Lucie Card, leading the investigation added: “This is a tragic incident which has resulted in the death of a 14-year-old boy.

“Our investigation into what happened is well underway but we need anyone who witnessed what happened to come forward and speak to us.

“Likewise, I would also ask any motorists in the area to review any dashcam footage that may have captured this collision.

“It is vital that with give this child’s family answers about what led to his death just a few days before Christmas.”
