When and where you can see a steam train pass through London and take a ride on one this Christmas

8

Steam trains have long captured the imaginations of Londoners ever since they were children, but many of us were born long after the last steam passenger service in Britain was decommissioned in 1968.

For most Londoners, our experience of steam trains are limited to seeing them in museums or on film sets, and very few of us have had the opportunity to board one.

But this month, Londoners will have the chance to cross the River Thames aboard one of the last functioning steam trains left in the country.

The 61306 Mayflower, one of two surviving B1 class steam engines that were built in 1948, will be pulling carriages around parts of West London on specific dates of December.

The Steam Dream will run on the 13th, 14th, 20th, and 22nd of the month, starting from London Victoria station at 6:50pm and returning to the same station at 9.50pm.

The train will chug along places and sites including Barnes, Richmond, Chelsea Harbour and the Battersea Power Station, crossing the Thames a total of six times as it goes round in a loop.
