A Leeds United supporter has been arrested after allegedly racially abusing Arsenal players during Saturday night’s clash.
According to The Athletic, a fan targeted Nicolas Pepe and Nuno Tavares, who were on the substitutes’ bench for the Gunners, with racial slurs as they were warming up near the corner in the first-half.
Rob Holding, who was also on the bench for Arsenal, could be seen on the television cameras getting on his feet and speaking to the fourth official about the incident.
Leeds have now confirmed that there will now be a full investigation into the incident at Elland Road.
A statement from the club read: “Racism will not be tolerated at Leeds United and any supporter found to be using racist language will be subject to a lifetime ban for all Leeds United games.”
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was asked about the alleged abuse after the game and confirmed that an incident had occurred.
Arteta said: “Unfortunately I can confirm that it was reported to the stadium manager and the authorities will deal with that. It was the players who were sitting on the bench, one of them heard those comments.
“I don’t know exactly who it was (directed at). That’s why they will have to be interviewed and they will deal with the authorities. It was one person and I don’t think that merits punishing the whole stadium because of one individual.”
football.london has contacted both Arsenal and the police for a comment on the alleged racist abuse and we will keep you up to date as and when more news arrives.
