early 37,000 confirmed Covid cases have been announced in London in just a week, official figures reveal today.
The capital also has the highest number of cases, fifteen, in the country of the Omicron variant which may be more able to evade vaccines to some degree and could spread more quickly than Delta which is currently the dominant mutation in the UK.
Yesterday 6,901 cases were announced for London, the highest figure since July 20 this year, with the UK figure rising to 53,945.
Inoculations against Covid have largely broken the link between cases and hospitalisation or death from the disease.
So, ministers and health chiefs are urging people to get fully vaccinated against coronavirus, with the expectation that the jabs, particularly the booster, will offer protection against all variants including Omicron.

They include three in Westminster, two in Barnet, Camden and Lewisham, and one in Bexley, Haringey, Lambeth, Newham, Sutton and Wandsworth.
There were 1,083 coronavirus patients in London hospitals, as of yesterday, with 181 so ill that they are on ventilators.
The number of Covid patients admitted to wards in London was 105 on Tuesday.
Eight deaths, within 28 days of the individual testing positive for the virus, were announced for London yesterday, taking the total since the pandemic started to 17,068.
The number of first doses of Covid vaccines administered in the capital rose to 6,170,787, according to figures published yesterday, second doses 5,599,517, and 1,853,266 boosters or third doses for individuals vulnerable to the disease.
