Brentford vs Manchester United game postponed after positive Covid-19 cases among visitors

Brentford’s game against Manchester United on Tuesday evening has been called off.

Thomas Frank’s side were due to face United – now under the leadership of Ralf Rangnick – in west London but a Covid-19 outbreak among the visitors means the match has been postponed.

There had been serious doubts that the match would go ahead after United confirmed on Monday they were closing their Carrington Training Complex for 24 hours to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

The decision was then confirmed late on Monday night.

A statement on United’s website read:

“Following PCR confirmation of positive LFT Covid-19 tests among the first-team staff and players, the outbreak requires ongoing surveillance.

“A decision was taken to close first-team operations at the Carrington Training Complex for 24 hours to help minimise risk of further infection, and individuals who tested positive are isolating in line with Premier League protocols.

“Given cancellation of training and disruption to the squad, and with the health of players and staff the priority, the Club requested the match to be rearranged. The Premier League Board took the decision to postpone based on guidance from medical advisors.”

The fixture is the second Premier League encounter of the season suspended due to Covid-19 cases, with Tottenham Hotspur’s scheduled trip to Brighton on Sunday postponed.

On Monday, it was confirmed that 42 Premier League players and staff tested positive for Covid-19 in the past week. That figure is the highest recorded over a seven-day period.

The amount of top-flight clubs suffering with Covid-19 surges is seemingly on the rise as the congested festive period creeps into view.

Leicester City left seven players at home on Thursday for their Europa League clash with Napoli due to positive tests and illness, while Arsenal have also had a member of staff test positive.

Aston Villa and Norwich City also have confirmed Covid-19 cases.
