Paul Robinson is delighted with reports that Tottenham Hotspur are offering Hugo Lloris a new deal at the club.
Spurs’ captain has just over six months left on his current contract. Thus, he can talk to foreign clubs regarding a pre-contract agreement as early as January.
However, as per Sky Sports, Tottenham are hopeful that the French international will agree to new terms in north London and extend his stay at the club.
That news has gone down well with former shot stopper Robinson, who has compared Lloris’ time at Spurs to David de Gea’s at Manchester United.
Lloris and de Gea are regarded as two of the best keepers of their generation, but they’ve both suffered from a slight dip in form over the past few years.
However, both have played well so far this season, and are deservedly in talks over respective new deals – at least according to Robinson.
“I don’t see why the club wouldn’t offer him a new deal,” he told Football Insider.
“He is back to his best. The 12-18 months before the Euros there was a question as to whether he should have been playing. His form dipped. He has rediscovered his form though.
“I’d say him and De Gea have had a similar plight. There was question marks over De Gea’s future but he could get a new contract now as well.
“Lloris has been brilliant this season. If you want to replace him you are going to have to pay a lot of money. There is not many goalkeepers of his calibre around.
“If Lloris is still fit and healthy why would you not offer him a new deal? I think they can get two or three years out of him.”
