Within seconds of the show starting, super fans of the show flocked to social media – with many saying that they ‘can’t believe’ his age.

Derek only managed to get two questions right in the cash builder

Derek only managed to answer two questions correctly in the cash builder, and went for the low offer of £1,000 in a bid to try and get back to the team for the final chase.

Normally, fans are furious when a contestant takes the low offer, but they could only be bothered to talk about his age.

Andy Bagley said: “Fair play Derek i hope i look that good at 83.. TBF i don’t look that good at 53 #TheChase.”

Another added: “Derek is already a ledge !!! No way is he 83!”

A third chimed in: “Looks in good nick for 83.”

He managed with ease to make it through to the final chase, sailing through the first round – with host Bradley Walsh pointing out that there would have been ‘no point’ in going for the higher offer.

Bradley Walsh told him: “You look well for 83.”

Derek, now retired, teaches Latin American dance twice a week, and thinking about winning some money, he said: “My wife tells me she needs a new husband but we’ll forget about that.

“We would decorate the house and do a few improvements and if there was anything else, we would share it between nieces and nephews.”

The team went on to win their share of the final cash prize, after beating The Chaser in the final round.
