A12 traffic: ‘Stolen’ car crashes near Romford after high-speed police chase with one taken to hospital

A high-speed police chase led to a crash which shut the A12 today.

The pursuit began at around 11.20am on the A12 in Romford, Essex, as Metropolitan Police officers attempted to stop a vehicle that had been reported as lost or stolen (Sunday, December 5).

The driver failed to stop and a pursuit took place on the A12 Whalebone Lane, Romford.

Due to the nature of the man’s driving, police called off the pursuit but the fleeing vehicle later collided with another car on the carriageway.

The driver ran from the scene, but was found nearby and was arrested on suspicion of driving offences.

The man driving the vehicle which was hit was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

As a result of the crash, the A12 Eastbound Avenue was closed earlier today and there are delays in the area.

The road re-opened at 12.30pm, but one lane remains closed and congestion is leading back to the North Street turn off.

Addressing the incident, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “At approximately 11:20hrs on Sunday, 5 December, officers attempted to stop a vehicle – that was reported as lost or stolen – on the A12 Whalebone Lane.

“The driver failed to stop and a pursuit was authorised. Due to the nature of the man’s driving, the pursuit was terminated.

“A short time later, the car collided with a second vehicle.

“The driver ran from the scene; he was located nearby and arrested on suspicion of driving offences.

“The driver of the second vehicle was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service; his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.”
