Bolt driver ‘stabbed to death by teenage boys’ was just months away from getting married

A group of teenagers, between the ages of 15 and 18 threatened to stab a taxi driver two days before the murder of a 37-year-old Bolt driver.

Gabriel Bringye was stabbed to death on Jarrow Road in Tottenham on February 17, after being randomly selected to pick up a fare.

He was found collapsed in his car at around 7.20pm and pronounced dead at the scene 40 minutes later.

The Romanian national had been due to celebrate his wedding later this year.

A jury at the Old Bailey has heard that his death was the culmination of a crime spree that took place between January and February, which saw the teenagers robbing cars and iPhones.

None of the defendants apart from David Adeyanju, who has since turned 18, can be named for legal reasons.

CCTV was shown to the jury of the group robbing vehicles and attacking other drivers

Five of the group are currently on trial facing six counts of murder, possession of a blade, conspiracy to steal and manslaughter.

Two 16-year-olds are also charged with robbing a teenage girl of her iPhone on the same date.

A sixth member of the group will face trial at a later date.

CCTV evidence presented to the jury showed the group engaging in a series of car robberies in the weeks leading up to the death of Gabriel Bringye.

On February 15, it was heard that six males had stolen an iPhone from a man at Woodside Park Tube station, before they ordered an Uber to their location.

Upon the arrival of the vehicle, a member of the group allegedly threatened: “Move back or I’m going to stab you.”

Footage obtained from a member’s iPad showed videos of them travelling around north London in the car listening to loud music.

DNA samples taken from the car and a hand-rolled cigarette point to Adeyanju and a 17-year-old member being in the vehicle.

Prosecutor Philip Evans QC also told the jury that on February 16, Adeyanju had ordered an Uber driver to take him to Muswell Hill, where he was joined by three other members of the group.

The court then heard that after driving them to Wood Lane in Highgate, they pulled up their hoods, grabbed his neck and said: “We’re taking the car from you, we want the car.”

The driver was able to alert members of the public and the police were called, although Adeyanju and the three others fled the scene.

That evening, they are alleged to have attempted to steal another car from a Swift driver, who had been sent to pick up three of the group from outside a Barclays Bank in North London.

Shortly afterwards, they attempted to pull the driver from his seat, with Mr Evans telling the court: “He was repeatedly punched and sprayed in the face with some kind of liquid which caused pain to his face and blurred his vision.”

CCTV shows the group assaulting the driver, with the 17-year-old crashing the car into a row of vehicles before fleeing with the group.

On the day of Gabriel Bringye’s murder, the court has heard that five members made their way to Hendon in North West London to steal a phone, which they then used to return to Tottenham.

Mr Evans QC said it was “tragically unlucky” that Mr Bringye accepted that Bolt request, which led to him suffering a fatal knife wound.

The five currently on trial have all denied murder and manslaughter.

The trial at the Old Bailey is expected to last for 10 weeks.
