The London Underground map is on course to being altered after Transport for London revealed that it is currently in the process of designing a new Overground station close to Millwall Football Club’s New Den stadium, south of the River Thames.
The station would be built on a site just south of Surrey Canal Road in Bermondsey, where provision to build a new station has existed since the Overground was extended to South London in 2011.
Construction was not then believed to be necessary at the time, however, thouasnds of new homes are now planned for the area as part of the New Bermondsey plan, which will see development of an ‘underused’ 30-acre industrial site.

Alexandra Batey, TfL’s director of investment delivery planning, told MyLondon that the proposed station is still very much at the planning stage with no decision yet been made whether it will be delivered.
The station is currently designed to have two separate entrances, with the ticket office on Surrey Canal Road
He said: “We’ve made some updates to previously agreed plans from 2011 to ensure the proposed Surrey Canal station meets the latest technical standards and requirements.
“This includes updating the station’s step-free proposals along with the potential provision for longer five-car trains and changes to signals for better driver visibility.
“Although design work is underway for the station, further operational assessments, designs and costs will need to be considered before a decision can be made on whether we can proceed.”
In an email to MyLondon, TfL also said that the new station on this London Overground route could be in place by the mid-2020s, but that is subject to “funding and other conditions”.

TfL said: “The new station would provide new public transport for existing residents and businesses and serve more than 5,000 new homes planned along with a wide range of new commercial and community and leisure space.
“Initial planning permission was granted in 2011 under a previous Transport and Works Act Order when the East London line was upgraded. These plans were for an outline design with this latest update providing more detail including the need to build any station slightly higher”.
Adding to that, TfL also said that design and development work on this project is being funded by the ‘Housing Infrastructure Fund’, which has been set up by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

However, TfL said that the fund is subject to “certain conditions”, without elaborating on what those conditions were.
Reports have stated that construction of the new station, which does not yet have an official name, will go hand-in-hand with the wider development of the area.
A housing development plan along Surrey Canal Road is said to include a ‘Grampian’ clause, by which permission for the development can only be granted on the condition that the new Overground station is built to serve its residents.
Development of the area will also include new bus stops and cycle parking.
