Ben Johnson reveals the minute detail David Moyes goes into in pursuit of West Ham success

Ben Johnson has revealed what it is like to work under David Moyes with the young defender highlighting the minute detail the manager goes into to get the best out of his team.

Academy graduate Johnson has become a fixture in the matchday squad this season and after his fine recent form, the 21-year-old is providing stiff competition for Vladimir Coufal in the right-back position.

After Coufal and Ryan Fredericks picked up injuries Johnson has grabbed his chance and his statistics this season are nothing short of remarkable. In the nine matches he has played West Ham have conceded just three goals with two of those coming last time out against Liverpool.

Johnson had previously played 575 minutes in a Hammers jersey this season without the team conceding. He is yet to taste defeat this campaign with eight wins and a draw – that West Ham went onto win via a penalty shootout – and opened his account for the season with a long-range effort on his weaker left foot.

Despite this success Johnson has admitted Moyes is not letting anyone rest on their laurels and is continually pushing his team on to improve.

“He is always driving us in training to keep our levels high and in games too and that is something you want to do,” Johnson told the Premier League show The Headline Makers. “We want to progress now and keep going, you want to test yourself even if the game feels like it is over if you are 3-0 up with ten minutes to go we want more.”

Such is Moyes’ attention to detail the first example Johnson had when explaining how this West ham team can improve was about the relatively minor point of throw-ins.

“He is always looking at what we can get better at because there are things that the manager will see that maybe we were not quite at it, for example, throw-ins we can work on them, there are things we can do in and out of possession that we can work on and little bits in our play we need to improve and the manager is a great spearhead for that.”

Moyes is known for working his team hard and never letting them settle and Johnson is loving life under the Scot despite the occasional raised voice.

“It is a great feeling to play under him,” Johnson added. “He gives you confidence and when he shouts at you that means he cares. He has been brilliant.”
