Antonio Conte and Tottenham suffer Cristian Romero injury scare ahead of Leeds United clash

Cristian Romero has handed Tottenham an injury scare after limping off in Argentina’s 0-0 draw with Brazil on Tuesday evening.

Helping his side to a 1-0 win over Uruguay on Friday, the Spurs man once again got the nod as he partnered Nicolas Otamendi at the back for his country.

However, Romero would only be on the pitch for 53 minutes after sustaining a muscle injury to his left leg in the opening few minutes of the second half and was duly replaced by German Pezzella.

Images from the game did show the 23-year-old clutching his hamstring when he was down on the ground waiting for treatment before his early exit.

Romero will now have to undergo tests to discover the extent of the injury and it raises question marks over his place in the Tottenham side to face Leeds United on Sunday.

A regular in the team now after initially starting the season on the bench, the summer signing has partnered Eric Dier and Ben Davies in a back three since Antonio Conte replaced Nuno Espirito Santo as head coach.

If indeed Romero is forced to miss out when Leeds make the trip to N17, the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga will all be fighting it out to take his place in the team.

Spurs come up against NS Mura in the Europa Conference League after their game at home to Leeds but that is a fixture Romero will sit out anyway following his dismissal in the previous match against Vitesse.

Argentina’s goalless draw with Brazil was enough to see them qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with four games to spare.

Now a key part of the Argentina team after only making his debut at the start of the year, Romero will be intent on adding a World Cup winners’ medal to his collection after helping the Albiceleste win the Copa America over the summer.
